VAAS Monument Project Proposal

The mission of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences is to provide support for the arts and sciences through schools and colleges; to conduct workshops and training programs in the arts and sciences for teachers; to sponsor performances, and conduct exhibits of the arts and sciences, including the annual Intercollegiate Student Symposium. VAAS also elects individuals to be honored by the Board of Trustees, as Fellows of the Academy, for having had distinguished careers in the arts or sciences, contributed to the arts and sciences in Vermont, and brought credit to Vermont through their achievements.   We would like to honor and dedicate this monument to the lasting support of Vermonters now and in the future who make lifelong contributions to the Arts and Sciences in Vermont.  There is no other monument in Vermont dedicated to this honor.

Granite Artist Chris Miller’s Model of the Monument

“This Monument is conceived to be the face and presence of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. The design and symbolic intention is based on the ruins of the Parthenon in ancient Greece, the cradle of Arts and Science. It features individual carved images of individual Scientific and Artistic icons. The monument is designed to be a compelling and inviting structure from a distance, reveal highly detailed images on closer inspection, and draw to the viewer to the listing of Academy Fellows on the back. This monument celebrates the achievements of Vermonters, and will be of interest to Vermonters and visitors alike. In a highly visible and well-trafficked location, it will be a source of pride to all Vermonters and an asset to the hosting community.”
— Chris Miller, artist
