The Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1965 on the initiative of Lucien M. Hanks, then Professor of Anthropology at Bennington College.

Our Purpose

“…to foster wider and more intensive participation in the arts, humanities and sciences within the State of Vermont, to make the values of these fields more accessible to the people of the State, and to stimulate achievement and promote excellence of instruction in these areas.”

The Mission of the Academy, among other things, is to conduct and sponsor events to meet our purpose, to cooperate with other associations and societies towards this purpose, to disseminate information about the arts, humanities and sciences, and to publish occasional papers on such events.
