2009 Intercollegiate Student Symposium

 

CALL FOR PAPERS  

     WHO: any undergraduate student attending a Vermont College or University

     WHAT:  original work in the arts or sciences

class essays, creative writing, research projects, artwork, musical compositions, and/or multimedia presentations

     WHEN:  submissions are due by March 31, 2009

electronic submissions are acceptable as long as they meet all of the submission criteria--including the faculty recommendation

        HOW:  see submission rules below

     WHY:  good experience for grad school, meet new friends, have fun, add an impressive line to your resume

SUBMISSIONS    

1) must be accompanied by a faculty recommendation acknowledging the outstanding nature of the work

2) must be in final format (no rough drafts); and include a cover letter indicating audiovisual requirements if any for science presentations a detailed abstract is acceptable

          WRITTEN WORK (including science abstracts):  Send a double-spaced photocopy and/or an e-mail attachment copy in “Microsoft Word”.

          ARTWORK:  Send e-mail attachment photographs with descriptions of the           medium for up to three (3) works.  The actual work must be displayed at the conference.  Include a text description of the nature of your presentation.

MUSIC:  Send an e-mail attachment of the score and a CD performance of the work.

THEATER:  Send a VHS or DVD of a short scene of the performance that you  plan to enact at the conference.  

MULTIMEDIA WORKS:  Send an e-mail attachment copy of your work.  Include a text description of the nature of your presentation.

3) must include a phone number and e-mail address where you may be reached  

4) presentations should not exceed 15 minutes, for written work this means about 7½ pages of text as 1 page takes about 2 minutes to read.

Your submission will be read by a professional in your general area of study.

If your work is accepted you will receive an invitation to participate, and will be expected to be present for the entire program (9:00-1:00) on April 25 to make your oral presentation and to support other students.  Lunch will be provided by VAAS.

Symposium events are free and open to the public, family, friends and professors.  Encourage your classmates, parents and mentors to attend!
